Sharing Innu destiny If OFF-CINARS tickets are sold out, please contact Geoffroy Faribault: carcajou.international@gmail.com Sometimes, in the life of a nation, a work of art arrives at just the right moment that, thanks to the emotion it arouses, brings about a collective awakening and transforms mentalities. Such is the case with Kukum, Michel Jean's novel published in 2019 and whose repercussions continue to spread. By imagining his great-grandmother recalling her life, the author makes us intimately feel the intense attunement of the natives' nomadic way of life to the land, rivers and forests, followed by the brutal dispossession of their territories, their forced sedentarization on reserves and the abduction of their children to distant boarding schools. At the beginning of the twentieth century, on the shores of the majestic Pekuakami - renamed Lac Saint?Jean - a fifteen-year-old white orphan falls in love with an Innu, Thomas Siméon. Leaving the stifling settler life of her aunt and uncle, she is welcomed with open arms and open hearts by her new family, adopting their language and annual migrations. Every autumn, the Siméon family embarks on their long canoes to reach their hunting grounds on the sumptuous Péribonka River. But at the end of one summer, Almanda and the Siméon clan find the river blocked by thousands and thousands of tree trunks, and see the mountains of their territory massacred by clear-cutting in the distance... Not to mention the men who tell them they're not at home. The stage adaptation by writer Laure Morali, with the collaboration of the great Innu poet Joséphine Bacon, features a dazzling cast of native actors and actresses, as well as Léane Labrèche-Dor in the moving role of Almanda. As director, the TNM is proud to welcome interdisciplinary artist of Anishinaabe and French origin Émilie Monnet, creator of Okinum and Marguerite : le feu, programmed by the prestigious Festival d'Avignon in 2023.
