Project Description: Outside | In - A Hybrid Immersive Performance

Outside | In is an innovative hybrid immersive performance, conceived by Mark Lawes and the Theatre Junction collective, drawing inspiration from the panopticon, science fiction, and escape games. This ground-breaking theatrical experience aims to explore freedom and social control, encouraging audiences to question the constructs that shape their lives.

The Concept and Inspiration: Outside | In takes inspiration from the panopticon, a prison design by philosopher Jeremy Bentham, emphasizing constant surveillance and its impact on individual freedom. Infused with science fiction elements, the performance envisions a near-future dystopian world where advanced technologies have led to all-encompassing surveillance throughout society, exploring themes of resistance, autonomy, and the quest for liberty.

The Hybrid Immersive Format and Platforms: Theatre Junction's choice to make Outside | In a hybrid immersive performance aims to reach diverse audiences and push the boundaries of conventional performance. Two distinct physical spaces act as primary stages, immersing in-person attendees and making them active participants. Simultaneously, the online platform extends the experience globally through live streaming and telepresence technology, fostering a unique sense of connection between the two sets of audiences.

Overall, Outside | In redefines the theatrical experience by merging tangible and virtual elements, challenging audiences to reflect on freedom, control, and agency in an increasingly digitized and surveyed world. Theatre Junction's cutting-edge technology and innovative storytelling create a captivating and thought-provoking exploration of the human condition, leaving a profound impact beyond the performance space.
